“Reasonable” Religion

More often than not, there have been questions asked about religion, if god exist or not, if he exists, what exactly does the invisible supernatural power do, and more importantly, if the religion proposed by him/her is reasonable or not. So, I just thought of writing something which proves how much reasonable religion is. Being an Indian, I see mainly Hindus, Christians and Muslims around me. So, let us ponder a bit about the origins of these religions here, and see how reasonable they are.

Let me start with a disclaimer note here. People who feel offensive need not read this, as the contents are definitely going to be offensive. The below content is my view point (clubbed with some other statements which I got from internet). Some of the facts stated might be wrong, but those are the stories I heard when I grew up.

As most of us know, the story of Christians started with god creating man on the sixth day of the 7-day long process. After a while, he created woman from a part of his body. Reasonable indeed, creation of universe in 7 days, and woman from a part of man’s body. Now, comes the funnier part. These 2 nudists, took dietary advice from a talking snake, had sex, blamed the snake for the sex, leading god to curse the snake, so that it loses it legs (along with its vocabulary skills), explaining why it crawls now, just making the “hiss” sound. Charles Darwin must be stunned to see his theory of evolution travelling on a reverse gear!

Now, coming to the origin of Islam, one of the youngest religions. Some say, Islam took off from Christianity, and for them the above story might suffice. Some others believe that God forgave Adam and Eve, and sent them down from heaven to earth (may be to have more sex). Wow, that makes life interesting right, another place (so called “heaven”), other than earth to have sex! And according to the majority, God existed before Prophet Mohammed did, and prophet was just a literal translator of what the god said. So, god gave this book to the angel Gabriel, who travelled from heaven to earth (in the reverse direction), and gave this to Prophet Mohammed, who just noted down the points in Arabic. Quite reasonable!

Being brought up (not born, but brought up) as a Hindu, I have countless similar “reasonable” stories about Hinduism as well. However, I will focus on some of the important stories. In one scripture, you have this young girl who wanted to have a child at any cost. Imagine who all made this happen! First in the queue was none other than “Sun”. Yeah, what we call today as a star filled with Hydrogen and Helium apparently was not filled with the same gases those days. I hope you noticed it, Mr. Galilieo, Copernicus and Kepler! Now, the next members up in the queue to do the same “stuff” were “death”, “wind” and so on. There are other scriptures in which another god steps on a stone, turning it to a beautiful lady, another one where god disguises, comes to earth as fish, tortoise, a kid who stamps on an emperor to send him deep beneath the earth, and what not! Again, very very reasonable!

Most of us in the present generation, when we grow old enough, do not believe these stories. However, most of us believe that god exists, and religions are good enough. But just think of what all happened because of the so called religion. Christian crusades, honor killing, human and animal sacrifices,  Spanish colonization of Latin America and slaughtering their tribes and tearing down temples to build churches, attempted annihilation of the Jews by Hitler, the war between Israel and Palestine, India and Pakistan, suicide bombings, circumcision of little boys, to state a few!

I will conclude with a statement which I saw in internet yesterday. Know “how to think” rather than “what to think”. For the same reason, I am stopping this here abruptly, go ahead and think!

  1. You have to admit they are quite entertaining, not to mention creative... I personally feel any man who thinks there is someone up there with a remote control controlling his life is beyond help. To quote from a bad Malayalam movie 'Vivaramillayama oru kuttamallallo.' When fanatics start ranting about how God sneezed and Higgs Boson happened, you switch off, play your favourite song in your head and nod along!

  2. he he.. :D

But before going with the reasoning of God and religion lets sit and think how well we understand religion and the ways it is thought..

understanding Vedas, which is considered as the base of hinduism is not a cake walk for most of us. And all my brain cells support my logic to think that the vedas were difficult 2000 years before also. Then someone wrote puranas to simplify vedas through symbolism. Each and every character and event symbolise some thing which is very reasonable..

for instance, we all know krishna using his most "dangerous" weapon sudarshana to kill asuras.. and we are used to seeing a revolving piece of metal cutting the heads of those asuras.. but thinking in a "Reasonable" way Sudarshana means Good Vision, So when sudarshana kills an asura with Sudarshana it can be that Krishna giving Good Vision to a bad guy and killing the bad guy by turning him to a good guy! which will be a "Reasonable thought" as every time Krishna kills an Asura with sudarshana, A Deva (Good guy :D) comes to picture after achieving moksha..

Same with 100 kauravas.. all of their name start with Du Which measns bad.. which parent will name their son "Duryodhana" which means a person did bad with his wealth.. so it may be pure logic to think that 100 kauravas symbolise 100 bad habits..

There will be a lot of such things that can add to this list..

so may be we need to think wthr Adam and Eve came to earth for having sex, or will there be something behind the screen which we are missing..

    and ya.. nice language.. ;)

    1. Ok, according to you, everything ultimately comes down to binary, 1 or 0, good or bad, right.

So, all the stories, all the books, all the scriptures, essentially have two type of people, or may be people with two characteristics - good and bad.

So, basically, there is nothing that you can associate with a religion, like the rituals or processions or anything for that matter, that comes today as a part and parcel of any religion. And so, it all boils down to no religion.

And that was exactly the point I was trying to emphasize!

  3. nope.. according to this we are taking away the whole concept of "binary" people... There is NO 1 or 0 !
no one is so bad that he cannot improve or no one is so good that he cannot do anything bad.. we have a choice.. angels don't have a choice but to be good.. and devil don't have a choice but to be bad.. we do have a choice in our deeds and how we are going to choose our way..? if we need a user guide to use our mobile, we need some guidance to live the right way...

  4. According to me, that guidance should start from parents with simple facts as "dont tell lies" etc etc.

The guidance will be continued by teachers, pointing out what is good and what is bad.

Guidance can be simple science, rather than what religious leaders preach and what religious books convey!

Ultimately, guidance should lead us to think us on our own, to decide what is right, and what is wrong. It should not be a pre-determined set of rules to enforce good and bad. The "good" deeds and the "bad" deeds of our life should not be determined by what someone wrote years ago.

Just as we cannot use an old nokia's user manual when we start using an iphone, we cannot use silly old stories and rituals and philosophies in a new way of life.
